A landmark town centre garden is set to reopen this spring following a two-year closure.

Queen’s Gardens closed to the public in 2020 when works began on the new Queen’s Quarter scheme on the site of the former Croydon Council building.

HUB have revamped and landscaped the public garden and it’s set to reopen between April and June this year.

Tom Stoneham, Senior Development Manager at HUB, said: “The design created by local people to improve Queen’s Gardens, developed in collaboration with international landscape architect Grant Associates, is really taking shape.

“Lots of planting has been happening over the winter so far, including multiple, substantial birch trees, as part of the plan to add 37 trees in total.

“In the new playground, solid oak play equipment has now been installed along with a curved slide, and a top coat was recently put on the paths.

“The next job is finishing the paths that will connect Queen’s Gardens to the surrounding buildings. The contractor is on track to finish work on Queen’s Gardens together with the fourth block in the second quarter of this year.

“The new homes in Queen’s Quarter are both for sale and rent, with 51 per cent designated as affordable.”

HUB’s development is comprised of 513 flats across four towers. Three of the four towers are now complete.

Part of the original Queen’s Gardens was created in the late 19th century. Croydon Council’s former office at Taberner House introduced a new garden when it opened in 1968, and in 1983 the two gardens were merged with a royal visit from the Queen.
