Croydon moves forward with updated Community Infrastructure Levy

Croydon Council is set to adopt an updated Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Charging Schedule, which will set the level of financial contributions developers will have to make towards the infrastructure needed to support growth across the borough.

The levy helps ensure that as new homes and developments are built, investment is also made in infrastructure and community facilities that local communities rely on, helping to create sustainable neighbourhoods and support future growth.

Surrey Street Market welcomes visitors with new gateway

A new gateway has been unveiled at Croydon’s historic Surrey Street Market as part of the Amplifying Surrey Street regeneration project.

Standing more than seven metres tall, the striking new structure welcomes visitors. Its design is inspired by the market’s new branding, which was developed with traders, businesses, residents and Surrey Street Action Group, led by Croydon Council.

Surrey Street Market is one of the oldest markets in Britain, with a history stretching back more than 750 years.

LSBU takes blood pressure checks into barber shops

London South Bank University (LSBU) is taking blood pressure checks out of the clinic and into the barber’s chair, in a community health project. Working in partnership with the Croydon BME Forum, the project has trained barbers across Croydon and Mitcham to offer free, on-the-spot blood pressure checks while customers wait for their regular trim.

By locating health checks in familiar neighbourhood spaces, the project aims to demonstrate how universities can work directly with communities to improve long-term health outcomes, build the capacity of local leaders, and make early detection genuinely accessible.
