East Croydon’s pedestrian bridge begins works
The Executive Mayor of Croydon Jason Perry has announced on LinkedIn that the funding agreements have now been signed, the necessary approvals are in place and Network Rail’s contractor will move onto the site on 19 August. The work will begin with surveys, investigations and site preparation before the main construction follows.
Once complete, the bridge will provide a direct and accessible connection between Addiscombe, East Croydon Station and the town centre. It will make journeys easier, support regeneration and strengthen the infrastructure Croydon needs to attract investment.
London Gatwick Aviation Academy helps more than 100 people take the next step into employment
110 people have successfully completed London Gatwick’s Aviation Academy’s 10-day course since its launch in February 2026. They have gained a Level 1 Introduction to Aviation qualification and a guaranteed interview with an airport employer. Across the whole Academy to date, 59 participants have either secured employment or are awaiting a start date, highlighting the programme’s success in creating direct pathways into work.
The Aviation Academy, delivered in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Crawley College, John Ruskin College and 12 employers across the airport, gives participants a unique insight into the aviation industry while helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to secure employment.
Professor Niamh Downing joins LSBU Group as Chief Commercial Officer
LSBU Group is delighted to announce Professor Niamh Downing will be their Group Chief Commercial Officer. This role follows a reorganisation of the Group Executive following the departure of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
As Group Chief Commercial Officer, Professor Downing will lead portfolio and business development across London South Bank University, South Bank Colleges and South Bank Academies. She will have executive leadership for LSBU Group’s portfolio strategy, development and lifecycle management, including Academic Standards and Regulations, Marketing, Student Recruitment and Communications, Business Engagement, Employer Partnerships and Apprenticeships and Skills Provision.
The Croydon Project completes its summer workshop
The Croydon Project has continued its programme of community engagement with two recent workshops focused on safety, public space, sustainability and the future of the town centre.
The first session, led by Publica, brought together 18 local participants alongside members of the project team, ward councillors and Croydon Council staff for a Women, Girls and Non-Binary People’s Safety Walk and workshop. The evening included a guided walk through the town centre followed by a creative discussion about people’s experiences of Croydon during the day and after dark.
The second workshop was held with The Croydon Project’s NextGen Panel, a panel of young Croydon residents working with URW to shape the future of their town centre. Hosted by Arup at their central London office and focused on sustainability in the built environment, the session was attended by 22 local young people, the project team, councillors and members of Croydon Council’s placemaking team.
Four more outdoor gyms on the way for Croydon
Four new outdoor gyms will open across Croydon over the next year as Mayor Jason Perry steps up investment in the borough’s parks and open spaces.
Mayfield Road Playground in Thornton Heath, Grange Park in Old Coulsdon, Ashburton Playing Fields in Addiscombe and South Norwood Recreation Ground will each receive new, fully accessible gym equipment.
Discover Croydon’s history and heritage with Open House Festival 2026
This September, Croydon invites visitors to uncover the architecture, stories, people and places that have shaped the borough, as Open House Festival returns from 12 to 20 September.
Events to look forward to:
- A major new exhibition at the Museum of Croydon. Shaping Croydon: Architecture and Ambition opens, tracing the evolution of Croydon’s skyline and the bold planning ideas that have shaped the town centre over the decades.
- South London artist Vic Lee has been commissioned to create a new 18m mural celebrating the 750th anniversary of Croydon’s Street Market.
- Build/Play/Shape, a two-day programme of interactive events and activities for families and young adults in The Queen’s Gardens.
- The Caravan Gallery brings its mobile art project, bringing a new Croydon exhibition displaying photographs from across the borough, capturing its architecture, streetscapes and community stories.
Other featured Croydon sites offering tours and workshops include Whitgift Almshouses, Stanley Arts, Fairfield Halls, and the Norman Fisher Observatory, each offering a unique lens into Croydon’s architectural identity and heritage.
Fairfield School of Business has successfully achieved the matrix Standard
Fairfield School of Business (FSB) has been awarded the matrix Standard, the national quality mark for organisations delivering information, advice and guidance, following a recent assessment.
The standard is awarded on behalf of the Department for Education and recognises impartial support that helps students make informed decisions about their learning and careers.
Assessors reviewed the experience of students, staff and university partners across FSB’s four campuses. Students described the support they received as “life changing,” and praised the approachability of tutors and the Personal Development Plan process used to track progress. University partners gave similarly positive feedback on working with FSB.
